Joy to the world! The Lord is come.
Let earth receive her King!
-Joy to the World, Isaac Watts

I am one who might… perhaps… if the Spirit so moves me… listen to Christmas music year round. And even so, singing Joy to the World at the end of the Christmas Mass stirs my heart. What stirs me most of all are the words “Let earth receive her King.” That is where the joy comes in. That is why we have the season of Advent to prepare. The Lord is coming and we are to receive him as King.

The prophecy of Isaiah points to this incredible joy. “In my God is the joy of my soul!” When we love God with all of our hearts and souls (and strength and mind, of course), we cannot contain the joy.

Let earth receive her King!

Come O Come Emmanuel. Come to save us. Come to show us the Father’s love. Come to bring us eternal joy. Make haste. Amen
